The Hellenic Republic Williamstown is a welcome addition to the many and varied restaurants in the beautiful seaside town; only minutes from Melbourne’s CBD. Renowned chefs George Calombaris and Travis McAuley serve, “traditional Greek food with a modern twist – in a taverna setting”.
Where to eat in Williamstown:
The old Hobsons Bay Hotel or “The Hobbo’s” to the locals is unrecognisable from it’s heyday as one of more than twenty pubs in Williamstown. The modern open building is a far cry from the cramped, dark building it once was. From the ground floor you can see right through to the upper level where a nightly special is served. I’ll be heading back on a Monday to see what the Moussaka is like. Classic daily specials are served in the upstairs bar for lunch and dinner for $15. The upstairs bar also serves a range of Greek style snacks.

The restaurant is a hive of activity with bookings allocated to two sessions for lunch and dinner. For a Sunday evening; the 5:45 – 7:45pm time suited us perfectly to allow for plenty of time to organise ourselves for the working week. The Hellenic team were friendly and helpful with the interesting menu selection. The busy and at times noisy atmosphere made it difficult to hear at times, especially for our host who found it tough to get above the chatter to inform us of the menu’s intricacies. There were several options I was tempted to try however I had the inside word about some of the dishes and decided to share the “Lamb shoulder, BBQ cabbage, honey mustard & kale” which was absolutely magnificent. The meat just fell away from the bone and was beautifully complemented by a side of the “HH Grain salad”, a mainstay for the restaurant. The portion sizes were ample to share. We also shared another side of “Heirloom carrot, fenugreek, almonds” which was a bit plain compared to the other two dishes.
The Fisherman’s basket looked interesting and included a variety of seafood but looked a bit light on in quantity as the bottom half of the basket was full of fried chips.
We’ll certainly go back to enjoy some of the other dishes and the lively atmosphere. For more information about the restaurant refer to their website.
